The Group runs University accredited five-day wilderness training courses at venues throughout the southern Africa region. There are developed for people working in wilderness areas and students reading for a Masters degree but will be of particular interest to people living on the boundaries of protected areas and wilderness areas or anyone who has a love for wilderness and an outdoor experience.

The Wilderness Action Group holds Wilderness Concepts and Practice Courses annually in venues in the southern African region. It has over ten years of experience in holding these courses.

The courses are accredited by the Centre for Environment, Agriculture and Development (CEAD) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. They are part of CEAD's postgraduate short course programme. T he programmes involve lectures, discussions, and group case study work and is usually held in formal or private protected areas. Facilitators who have a good depth of experience in Wilderness Management run the courses.


Wilderness and Protected Area Managers and staff, in both the formal and private sectors, Conservation-orientated NGOs staff and members, Key Community Members living on the boundaries of protected areas, and anyone interested in learning more about wilderness conservation.

The Group also presents a wilderness concepts and practice course for Masters students at CEAD. For more details contact the Administration Staff at 033-260-6223 or 033-260 5775 . This course focuses on the scientific and philosophical arguments for wilderness.


The language medium of courses is English. The courses are limited to a maximum of 25 participants, but are determined by the venue facilities.


Accommodation is provided, however participants MUST bring their own sleeping bags, toiletries and towels.


The dates and venue will be advised on application. Course participants will have to make their own travel arrangements to the venue.


Both courses are of five days duration.


All meals and teas are provided. The Course Secretariat must be advised of any special dietary requirements at the time of application.


The course fees will be advised on application includes all lectures, course manuals, accommodation, meals, and field trips. A registration fee of R 500 MUST ACCOMPANY THE APPLICATION and is non-refundable and forms part of the full course fee. Please make the cheques out to the WILDERNESS ACTION GROUP.

The full amount of the course fees must be paid once a place on the course has been confirmed at least one month before the start of the courses.

The Wilderness Action Group may have a number of bursaries that will cover the remaining portion of the course fees. Applications will be considered and the closing date for bursary application will be advised on application.
