Wilderness and Practice Consept Courses |

There is an ongoing need to raise funds for the annual Wilderness Concepts and Practice courses. The Group plans to meet the demand for these courses in the Western and Eastern Cape, the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces in South Africa and Namibia in 2005. |

A Survey of All the Wilderness Areas and Candidate Wilderness Areas in Southern Africa |
|
There is an urgent need to compile an accurate inventory of the existing wilderness areas in southern Africa and to identify candidate wilderness areas and to develop submissions to have the candidate wilderness areas designated by the Managing Authorities. This should commence as soon as possible. |

Publishing of the 1989 South African Wilderness Symposium Proceedings |

The proceedings are an important set of papers on wilderness issues from an historical and development of wilderness conservation in South African. |

Publishing of the best Wilderness Essays from the Wilderness Concepts and Practice Courses. |
|
The participants on the courses from 1999 have been required to submit essays as part of the assessment process. There are a number of excellent essays that the Wilderness Action Group and the Centre for Environment and Development would like to publish in 2005. They will be an excellent reference material for future participants on the wilderness courses and for researchers on wilderness conservation in the southern African region. |

Re-constitute the Environmental 12 Consortium |

Wilderness area was retained on the South African protected area categories list until publication of the draft National Environmental Management : Protected Areas Bill, in 2002, when inexplicably, wilderness was omitted. The Group was responsible for the formation of a consortium (the Environmental 12 Consortium) which comprised the partners listed below, and played the lead role in the preparation of comment on both the NEM : Protected Areas and the Biodiversity Bills. It also made presentations to the environmental portfolio committees of both the National as well as the KZN Provincial Parliaments. |

Organise and Hold a Southern African Wilderness Symposium |
|
After the 8 th World Wilderness Congress in Alaska September 2005, there will be a need to hold a Wilderness Symposium in the southern African region. The last one was in 1989 in Durban. The purpose will be to discuss and make recommendations to Governments and Civil Society on the value and benefits that wilderness can offer. This symposium could be held in 2006 or 2007. |
