Somkhele Open-Cast Anthracite Mine

WAG is currently collaborating with the Magqubu Ntombela Foundation to address the extensive impact of the Somkhele open-cast anthracite mine on the eastern boundary of the Imfolozi Game Reserve and the nearby wilderness area. Initial concerns, raised when AfiOre was still prospecting the area, have been ignored. The situation has seriously deteriorated since 2007 when Petmin, the new owners, started mining activities that have serious implications for the Imfolozi wilderness area.

Major impacts are from the noise, light, dust pollution, blasting that can be felt and heard, and a disturbing increase in the population as newcomers move into the area looking for work and establishing small businesses and service related activities. The area is rapidly changing from rural to semi-urban. Petmin's interim report refers to extending mining activities and the imminent opening of a second pit. There is no detail of where this pit will be sited but there are concerns it might be closer to the HIP boundary.

Information is being gathered but funding is needed to enable WAG to investigate these issues more fully and to ensure that applicable legislation and controls and the conditions of the mining licence are being adhered to. Petmin needs to be held accountable for strictly implementing the environmental management plan (EMP) for the mine.
