Ilan Lax ~ Chairman

ilan_lax_mugshotAlan (known as Ilan) Lax is an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, admitted to practice in 1985. He has a B. Proc from University of KwaZulu-Natal and has completed the course work component of a Masters degree in Environmental Law. His practice has been widely varied and focused on human rights law. He was appointed on 1 March 1996 to the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a member of the Human Rights Violations Committee (HRVC). In March 1998 he was appointed to the TRC’s Amnesty Committee (AC) and served in this capacity until the end of May 2000 when the committee was disbanded.

Sheila Berry ~ Deputy Chair

sheila_berry_mugshotSheila Berry grew up spending a lot of time exploring the veld with her three older brothers but it was Dr Ian Player who introduced her to the concept of wilderness in 1983 when she heard him talking on the radio about Jung and the wilderness. At the time she was studying psychology. She went on a wilderness trail and then attended the third World Wilderness Congress in Scotland, where the Wilderness Action Group was established. For several years she worked with the Wilderness Leadership School developing leadership with corporate teams and working with youth at risk. Her main focus was in researching and understanding the powerful therapeutic process that takes place in wilderness. In this she was strongly influenced by Robert Greenway, the leading wilderness psychologist from Sanoma State University, CA, USA.

Rosanne Clark ~ Secretary

rosanne_clarke_mugshotRosanne was brought up on a farm in the Underberg district of the Drakensberg mountain region. As a Relief Officer for Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife (EKZNW) at Lotheni Game Reserve she was offered work with the Wilderness Foundation. Through this Rosanne became very involved in wilderness. She has attended two World Wilderness Congresses, the 7th and 8th. She worked on the secretariat of the 7th WWC and also as coordinator of the first International Wilderness Practice and Concepts Course. Rosanne fulfilled similar duties at the 8th WWC in Alaska where she was part of the second pre-congress International Wilderness Course and presented a poster. She has also participated in four Living Lake conferences in Japan, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy where she was asked to present posters at three of the four conferences.onferences.

Mervyn Gans ~ Treasurer

mervyn_gains_mugshotMervyn became interested in mountaineering during his student days at the University of Natal (now known as the University of KwaZulu-Natal) and is a Honorary Vice- President of the KZN section of the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA). Through mountaineering Mervyn developed a passion for wilderness and was initially invited to join WAG as an MCSA representative. He is also a keen bird watcher, trout fisherman, and has recently got into mountain biking.
