Achievements

The Group has made important contributions and achievements. These include:

  • The preparation of submissions to governments, politicians, decision-makers and international agencies on the values of wilderness and the need for the formal conservation of the few remaining wilderness areas

  • Involvement in education and training programmes for wilderness managers, administrators, users of wilderness areas and communities living adjacent to wilderness areas, with respect to the many technical and other aspects of wilderness management and conservation;

  • Collaboration and networking with other environmental and wilderness conservation organisations, at both international and national levels, on issues pertinent to WAG’s mission.

  • Assisting Shamwari Private Game Reserve (Eastern Cape) in their wilderness area planning and management strategies as a joint project with the Wilderness Foundation;

  • The preparation of a joint submission to the Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) on provision for wilderness protection in the Protected Areas Act on behalf of the Group, the Wilderness Foundation and WILD and a consortium of environmental NGOs, and;

  • Received two certificates of recognition from the Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife for commitment to wilderness conservation and training in the Province.

The Group is proud of its achievements in promoting the wilderness concept both nationally and internationally, through the endeavours of its members. In particular WAG is striving, to emphasize the importance of and unique nature of African wilderness, and the need to conserve the last remaining wildernesses, and their biophysical, cultural, historical and spiritual values, for present and future generations.

The Group is the principal repository of expertise and experience in the various aspects of wilderness conservation and management on the subcontinent.
